Abstract

The article presents a theoretical reflection on the problem of the relationship between certain notions of the individual and property as central elements of modern sociability. This relationship is understood through the expression possessive individualism, which is a synthesis of the problem for social theory. The starting point is the theory of C.B. Macpherson, who formulated the expression in the context of the democratic crisis of the 20th century, through an interpretation of 17th century English political philosophy. The general context of this theory is recovered, with the aim of exploring the multiple meanings that run through the conjunction and of interrogating how possessive individualism interpellates current political issues. On the one hand, certain limitations of Macpherson's theory are emphasized, while on the other, the importance of the analytical framework of possessive individualism and the need to expand its scope are supported. This is done by analyzing Étienne Balibar's review of possessive individualism, through an interpretation of John Locke's philosophy that integrates political and metaphysical theory, demonstrating how an order of appropriation is already inscribed in consciousness. Based on this theoretical frame, some consequences of this theory are established for the constitution of political bonds and in the face of the contemporary critical scenario.
