Multiple senses of law and the search for a focal meaning

The notions of analogy and focal meaning, elaborated by Aristotle and developed by medieval authors, refer to concepts which, although expressed by the same terms, have partly equal and partly distinct meanings. These ideas can help to understand the various meanings of the word "right/law" and to identify the hierarchy among them. According to the Roman jurists, the original meaning of the law is ipsa res iusta, the just thing itself. That is, the object of an act of justice, that which is due to a part in a balanced relationship of exchange of goods. From this meaning, two other fundamental ones have been derived: law as the technique by which the law - the just thing - is discovered in a concrete case; and law as norms, because they are the measure of the law - the just thing. We see that these three meaning are related, and one of them is the focal meaning. They all are "law", have a common substance, and, at the same time, they are distinct from each other.References
